Spurred on by recent success with curing the Subscription-to-Comments-headache, I now have the wiki plugin working nicely.
If I write some text in my post with the words capitalised and smashed together (ie CamelCase ), the blog will automatically turn it into a link on the wiki. If the page doesn’t already exist it will automatically be created and you can start editing (which is normal wiki behaviour!).

WordPress is really quite good for a lot of stuff and a complete bitch for others. Setting it up at first takes moments and adding/editing articles is effortless. The user and category management is suitably simple and logical. Changing the theme and style of the site as easy as editing a css file and moving a few lines about in index.php. BUT adding in plugins can be a bit of a nightmare!
Subscription to comments just isn’t playing the game at the moment, I suspect this is because it is not playing nicely with the nested comments thingy. I’ve ruled out the php mail() function (in that it defintely doesn’t work but the SMTP hack I’ve added does).
Anyway, I recommend no one subscribe to the comments on this post as I shall be largely mucking about with the code to try to get it to work and you may suddenly discover you get a deluge of comment notifications!
Edit: I’ve fixed it! It was indeed a problem with the nested comments plugin as described (and indeed cured) here at comment number 85.
Much happier now!
Work proceeds apace with the WordPress experiment here on PracticalUseful.com (with a view to using it for TeaDrinkingMonkey.org.
I now have not only an anti-spam authorising image doohickey BUT ALSO nested, collapsable comments. Edit: Now added Subscribe to Comments tick box too…
Next part of the plan is to build in support for linking stuff written in CamelCase straight to an associated wiki (there is a handy plugin that, with a little modification, should do this for me).
Anyone involved in the TeaDrinkingMonkey.org project, your comments on how the comments work on this blog are most welcome along with suggestions for layout/colour scheme/etc for the actual design of the TeaDrinkingMonkey.org site.
There are some templates here, here, here and here. Decide which shape you like, all colours and pictures can be edited as appropriate.
It has been a long time coming, but the old www.thom.inuk.com has been needing to be updated or decomissioned. The former is tricky because it doesn’t live on webspace with pretty things like MySQL or PHP so we are forced to resort to the latter.
My old LiveJournal Blog has been sadly neglected for a long time so it’s about time it also got suitably revised or ditched.
Finally I’ve become involved with The Plan which meant I needed to get to grips with a suitably powerful piece of blog-management software like WordPress.
The result of this is the sexy new PracticalUseful.com website which uses aforementioned WordPress, has old LJ posts imported and will (gradually) have any other useful tip-bits from the old thom.inuk.com site transported over.
Everything is currently a work in progress and I, notoriously, have little time to devote to it.
